Affordable housing developer Abode Communities has finally kicked off work for the Rolland Curtis Gardens redevelopment, based on a picture posted to the nonprofit builder's Facebook page.

The project at Exposition Boulevard and Wisconsin Street will feature a series of one-to-five-story buildings containing 140 affordable apartments, 8,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial space and a 114-car garage.  Plans also call for a landscaped central courtyard with a children's play area.

The former Rolland Curtis Gardens, a collection of two-story buildings featuring 48 low-income units, was jointly purchased by Abode and T.R.U.S.T. South L.A. in 2012 for $9 million.

An approximately two-year development time is forecasted for the project, which abuts Metro's Expo/Vermont Station.
