The Ratkovich Company and Jerico Development, Inc. have unveiled new details about the San Pedro Public Market, the planned redevelopment of San Pedro's Ports O' Call Village.

The updated proposal, unveiled yesterday at a town meeting at the Warner Grand Theatre, envisions a "vibrant, family-friendly shopping, dining, entertainment and recreational themed destination," on the L.A. Waterfront.

Rapt Studio is serving as the project's design architect, with landscapes by James Corner Field Operations, and Adamson and Associates serving as Executive Architect.  Renderings of the completed project portray a series of industrial-themed buildings, a nod to the surrounding operations at the Port of Los Angeles, intersected with landscaped open spaces.  This includes a 30-foot-wide continuous waterfront promenade along the site, as required by Ratkovich and Jerico's master ground lease with the Port.

The entire project site is approximately 16 acres in size, including nearly three-quarters of a mile directly along the waterfront.

Construction of the San Pedro Public Market is expected to occur in multiple overlapping phases.

Demolition is now underway at an existing seawall to make space for the new promenade, with work anticipated to wrap up in 2021.  Construction of the first half of the market itself is tentatively scheduled to begin in July 2019, with an opening date targeted in either late 2020 or early 2021.  The second phase of the project would break ground in early 2021, with completion anticipated later that year or early in 2022.

The phased approach is intended to allow existing businesses - including the San Pedro Fish Market, Cafe International, Crusty Crab, and Harbor Breeze Cruises - to remain open during construction.

The updated plan emerges as Hawthorne-based aerospace company SpaceX considers a ground-lease for an 18-acre site on Terminal Island, which could be used as a manufacturing facility.
