In September, a 20-17 Rams victory over the visiting Dallas Cowboys marked the debut of Inglewood's SoFi Stadium - a $5-billion monolith which ranks as the most expensive sporting venue ever built in the United States.  Now, a time lapse video produced by EarthCam condenses four years of construction into three minutes.

The 70,000-seat stadium, located at the former site of the Hollywood Park Racetrack, was built by Rams owner Stan Kroenke to play host to both his team, as well as the rival Los Angeles Chargers.

HKS Architects designed the 3.1-million-square-foot open-air venue, which is shielded from the elements by a swooping canopy composed of ETFE.  The roof structure is inlaid with lights which display different colors at night - including the logos of the two NFL teams which call it home.

SoFi Stadium was built as the centerpiece of larger 300-acre development - led by Wilson Meany - which will include:

  • 25 acres of open space;
  • 300,000 square feet of offices;
  • a 340,000-square-foot retail complex;
  • a 300-room hotel; and
  • up to 2,500 homes.

Additionally, the NFL has announced its intent to relocate the new home of the NFL Network, NFL.com, the NFL app, and NFL Redzone into a 200,000-square-foot office complex adjacent to the stadium.

SoFi Stadium, in addition to a $1.2-billion arena complex planned by the Los Angeles Clippers, has sparked concerns of gentrification and displacement in Inglewood, which has long been an African-American enclave in Southern California.  In anticipation of new investment spurred by the stadium and surrounding development, the City of Inglewood moved to adopt a permanent rent control ordinance in 2019.
