Clifford Beers Housing and American Family Housing are scheduled to break ground on November 13 on a permanent supportive housing project near the interchange of the I-105 and I-110 freeways.

The Isla Intersections development slated for a city-owned property at 283 W. Imperial Highway, will consist of a five-story building featuring 53 studio apartments reserved for formerly homeless persons and one manager's unit.

The project, designed by LOHA, will be built from shipping containers - allowing on-site assembly to occur within 30 days.  This represents a significant time and cost savings over similar permanent supportive housing developments using more conventional forms of construction.

The full-construction timeline is estimated at 12 months, according to a representative of Clifford Beers Housing.

Plans also call for 900 square feet of ground-floor retail space, which will front a new shared street along the western property line.  The space, called the Annenberg Paseo, is named for the Annenberg Foundation, which is helping to fund the project.

The approximately $21.7-million project will offer rents priced for households earning at or below 30 and 40 percent of the area median income, according to a staff report by the Housing and Community Investment Department.

Another supportive housing development composed of prefabricated modular units is now under construction in Westlake.  The technology is also being employed for the new citizenM hotel in Downtown Los Angeles and at a market-rate apartment complex under construction in Leimert Park.
