Six months after Virgil's Hardware Home Center closed its doors, a staff report to the Glendale Design Review Board offers a look at what is set to rise in its place.

Sunrise Senior Living, a Virginia-based developer of housing for older adults, has keyed in on the corner property at Glendale Avenue and Doran Street as the site of its latest Los Angeles area project. Plans call for razing the former Virgil's building, clearing the way for the construction of a new three-story, 85,000-square-foot building which would feature 90 rooms (with 114 total beds) above a 51-car subterranean parking garage.

Lantz-Boggio Architects is designing the complex, which would be arranged with a motor court facing Doran Street and a landscaped resident courtyard at the rear of the site.

The staff report to the Design Board states that the project features a style and materials which are consistent with that of the surrounding neighborhood, and recommends approval, subject to certain conditions regarding design detailing and potential light spillover onto adjoining properties.
