Construction has topped out at the Santa Monica Proper Hotel, according to an announcement from Howard Laks Architects.

The project, located at 710 Wilshire Boulevard, features new construction as well as the restoration of a historic Spanish Colonial Revival structure.  The two buildings will combine to offer 271 guest rooms, 7,000 square feet of retail space, event space and various amenities.

Renderings show a contemporary mid-rise building with an amorphous footprint, wrapping the historic architecture, which dates to 1928.

The Santa Monica Proper is one of two Proper Hotels now under development in Southern California by Kor Group.  The other, now taking shape at 11th and Broadway in Downtown Los Angeles, will feature 148 guest rooms in a historic YMCA building.
