At its meeting on January 25, the Los Angeles City Planning Commission will consider Providence Health & Services' proposal to partially rebuild its Tarzana hospital.

Providence Tarzana Medical Center, located on Burbank Boulevard to the south of the US-101 freeway, is slated for the construction of a new patient wing and standalone garage, resulting in 274,000 square feet of newly programmed space and parking for up to 565 vehicles.  At completion, the proposed modernization would result in a slight decrease in the total number of acute care inpatient beds at the hospital from 249 to 244, and an expansion of total parking accommodations from 1,251 vehicle spaces to 1,500 vehicle spaces.

Perkins + Will is designing the project, which is highlighted by the new patient wing - a sleek six-story building rising to a maximum height of 120 feet above ground level.

The Planning Department's staff recommendation points to the likely approval of the project.

Providence's modernization of the Tarzana hospital is driven by a state law that requires the replacement or retrofit of aging medical facilities in the aftermath of the 1994 Northridge earthquake.  Completion could occur as early as 2022, or as late as 2025.
