An initial study published this week by the Los Angeles Department of City Planning sheds new light on a proposed spinal and orthopedic surgery hospital in Mid-Wilshire.

DOCS Surgical Hospital, planned for a roughly 26,000-square-foot site at the intersection of San Vicente Boulevard and Orange Grove Avenue, would consist of a five-story building containing medical offices, 17 patient beds, four operating rooms, a pharmacy, ground-floor commercial space, and parking for 40 vehicles.  The project calls for demolishing the existing single-story structure in which the surgery center currently operates.

Mesa Design Architects is designing the proposed development, which is depicted as a boxy low-rise structure clad in materials such as stone, terra cotta, and glass.  An amenity deck would cap the building's roof level, while parking is planned for a surface lot to the east and within the ground-level of the hospital.

City records list the project applicant for DOCS Surgical Hospital as Dr. Khawar Siddique, a physician at the existing surgery center.

According to the initial study, construction of the hospital is expected to occur over an approximately three-year period, with opening anticipated in mid-to-late 2024.  That schedule is contingent on the approval of project entitlements by the City of Los Angeles - including a general plan amendment.

The development site is located one block east of the “asterisk” intersection of Fairfax Avenue, San Vicente Boulevard, and Olympic Boulevard, where Jacmar Cos. is planning a six-story, 120-unit apartment building with ground-floor retail space.

The proposed surgical center would rise one block south of Olympia Medical Center, a 204-bed hospital at 5900 Olympic Boulevard which is expected to close its doors at the end of March.  The facility has been purchased by UCLA, which reportedly plans to renovate and reopen the hospital.
