Permanent supportive housing unwrapped on Rose Avenue in Venice

The wrapping is off across the street from Whole Foods in Venice, as a more than $20.6-million permanent supportive housing development from Venice Community Housing Corp. (VCHC) continues to take shape.

Located at 718 E. Rose Avenue, the project replaced VCHC's former offices with a new four-story building that will feature 35 studio and one-bedroom apartments, all of are to be reserved for transition-aged youth and persons who have experienced chronic homelessness.

Per a 2019 staff report to the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee, the Rose Avenue apartments are expected to offer monthly rents ranging between $548 and $913 per month.

Brooks + Scarpa designed the low-rise structure, which is built with wood framing and has a U-shaped footprint centered on a landscaped central courtyard. Plans call for 17 parking spaces on the property's ground level, as well as room for on-site service providers, and a 2,500-square-foot replacement office for VCHC.

In addition to the Rose Avenue Apartments, VCHC is also planning two other large supportive housing developments in its namesake neighborhood. Just over a mile south on Lincoln Boulevard, VCHC is partnering with the non-profit organization Safe Place for Youth on a similar 40-unit housing complex. Next to the Venice Canals, the developer is partnering with Hollywood Community Housing Corp. on a proposed 140-unit complex which would replace a public parking lot.
