Shy, who is responsible for many of the adaptive reuse projects which now line Spring Street, is now three years into his conversion of the historic Western Costume Building into housing. The project, called the 939 Lofts for its location at 939 S. Broadway, is transforming the 12-story building into 151 condominiums above street-level retail and restaurant space.
The sales website shows a mix of studio, one-, and two-bedroom floor plans - including units located at both the ground- and basement levels of the building. Images also show that the finished project will include a gym, a theater, and a rooftop swimming pool.
Completed in the mid-1920s, the Western Costume Building was designed by architect Kenneth McDonald Jr. in the Renaissance Revival Style. It made frequent appearances in motion pictures during the 1920s, including some featuring Harold Lloyd and Laurel and Hardy.
