In a ceremony held on December 10, co-developers Azure and Many Mansions joined with city officials to announced the start of construction for La Guadalupe, a mixed-use supportive housing complex that will rise across the street from the Mariachi Plaza subway station in Boyle Heights.

Located at the southeast corner of 1st Street and Boyle Avenue, the project will consist of a five-story, 60,000-square-foot building comprised of 44 studio, one-, and two-bedroom dwellings - reserved for rent at levels considered affordable to the very low- and extremely low-income levels - above approximately 7,100 square feet of ground-floor commercial space and a 41-car garage.

“We have a humanitarian crisis of homelessness greater than anywhere in the country - which stems from the fact that we simply do not have enough affordable housing," said 14th District City Councilmember Kevin De Leon in prepared remarks during the ceremony. "That is why today is so important. These 44 affordable units are critical to the fight to prevent people in our Boyle Heights community from joining the ranks of the unhoused."

The project's target population is homeless and chronically homeless families and individuals, who will be selected to live in La Guadalupe through the Los Angeles County’s Coordinated Entry System. In addition to housing, residents will receive services including on-site case management, financial education courses, food assistance, transportation assistance, and life skills training.

Y&M Architects is designing the apartment complex, which will be clad in a combination of masonry veneer and fiber cement boards.  Planned open space amenities include amenity decks at the roof and podium levels, as well as a community room.

Financing for the project includes a variety of state and local sources, such as Measure HHH and low-income housing tax credits.

A similar affordable housing development with street-level retail was completed across the street from La Guadalupe in 2017, and another project is slated for a Metro-owned site adjacent to the Mariachi Plaza subway station entrance.
