A plan for a mixed-use affordable housing development next to a Metro subway station in Boyle Heights continues to move forward.
The project, called the Los Lirios Apartments, is being developed on Metro-owned property by East L.A. Community Corporation (ELACC). Plans call for the construction of a five-story edifice featuring 64 apartments - including 63 affordable units - above 2,443 square feet of ground-floor retail space and 50 subterranean parking stalls.
ELACC has proposed a mix of studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom dwellings which will serve homeless individuals and households earning between 30 and 50 percent of the area median income.
Gonzalez Goodale is designing Los Lirios, which would wrap the plaza of Metro's Soto Station, which is served by the L Line. Architectural plans show that the low-rise structure would include more than 8,000 square feet of open space, including community features such as a central courtyard, a roof terrace, and an exercise room.
An environmental study published by the City of Los Angeles states that the developer anticipates that the project will start construction in 2020 and open sometime in 2021.
ELACC has developed numerous properties at 1st Street and Boyle Avenue, including the two phases of the Cielito Lindo apartments at the northeast corner of the intersection. The organization is also restoring the 125-year-old Peabody Warden house as a community center.
