Long Beach affordable housing development slated for $24.3M in funding

In a consent calendar vote the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has adopted a resolution approving the release of up to $24.3 million in bond financing for the construction of a mixed-use project that would bring new apartments for lower-income seniors to Long Beach.

The proposed development, sponsored by Mercy Housing of California, would rise at the northwest corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway, replacing a collection of small commercial buildings. Plans call for the construction of a four story building containing 67 apartments for moderate-, low-, and very low-income seniors above roughly 4,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial space and parking for 38 vehicles.

Designed by Studio One Eleven, the proposed development would blend contemporary architecture with elements of the Art Deco and Streamline Moderne styles. Exterior cladding would include smooth stucco, fiber cement siding, and metal, while proposed amenities include a podium-level courtyard, a community room, and a common laundry facility.

Mercy Housing's other Los Angeles-area affordable housing developments include ground-up projects planned or under construction in Downtown, Reseda, Chatsworth, and Sherman Oaks.
