The owner of a late 19th-century church in University Park intends to convert the one-story structure into apartments, according to the agenda of this week's meeting of South Los Angeles Area Planning Commission.

An entity called The Pews at SC, LLC owns the small structure at 1276 W. 29th Street, and filed plans for the adaptive reuse project in 2017.  The proposed development would yield seven apartments in addition to parking for eight cars and perimeter landscaping.

The proposed development, which is being designed by Los Angeles-based L+V Architects, would be marketed towards students at nearby schools - including USC.

The project is being appealed for a group called the North University Park Community Association, which argues that the current plan for the preservation of the church is unsatisfactory.  A staff report to the Commission recommends that the appeal should be denied.
