Across the street from East L.A.'s sprawling Calvary Cemetery, developer Meta Housing Corp. is putting the finishing touches on its latest affordable housing complex.

The La Paz Apartments, located at the northwest corner of Whittier Boulevard and Downey Avenue, consists of a three-story structure that will offer 42 apartments and 1,161 square feet of ground-floor retail space at completion.

According to a 2019 staff report to the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee, the apartments will come in a mix of studio, one-, and two-bedroom dwellings priced for households earning no more than 35 percent of area median income.  In 2019, it was expected that monthly rents would range from $509 for a studio unit to $654 for a two-bedroom apartment.

GGA designed La Paz development, which is of a contemporary style and features an exterior of corrugated metal panels.

La Paz is a sister project to another Meta Housing development at the southeast corner of the same intersection.  The firm's other under-construction projects are located in Sylmar, North Hills, and Downtown.
