Construction is underway for a Hyatt House Hotel at the USC Health Sciences Campus in Boyle Heights.

The project, which is being developed by Mayer Corp., is now rising at the northeast corner of San Pablo and Alcazar Streets.  Plans call for a five-story building that will feature 200 guest rooms, 14,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, and a roughly 18,000-square-foot conference center.

AHT Architects is designing the contemporary hotel, which will feature a pool deck and a 310-car parking garage.

Mayer Corp. obtained a $49-million construction loan for the project in October.

Completion is anticipated in early 2020.

The hotel is rising next-door to a currently vacant site which is slated for the next phase of student housing at the USC Health Sciences Campus.  The proposed six-story, 95-unit building at 1630 San Pablo Street was approved earlier this year.

The centerpiece of the surrounding L.A. County + USC Medical Center - the historic General Hospital Building - was the focus of a recent action by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, which has initiated a study of the potential adaptive reuse of the 19-story Art Deco landmark.
