Three months after the start of construction, the $624-million expansion of Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center is beginning to climb just south of the US-101 Freeway.

Located on a 13-acre site bounded by Burbank Boulevard, Etiwanda Avenue, and Clark Street, the project will add approximately 190 private rooms and a 600-car garage to the hospital campus.

The centerpiece of the project, designed by Perkins and Will, is a six-story patient tower.  Rising 120 feet in height, the building will be visible from the adjacent freeway and the surrounding neighborhood.

Plans also call for the addition of a landscaped garden near the center of the campus, connecting the new patient tower with the existing Women's Pavilion.

Providence St. Joseph Health and Cedars-Sinai, which are developing the project as a joint venture, will also remodel and implement seismic retrofits to existing buildings.

Completion of the expansion is expected in 2023.

The project is motivated by a state mandate to either retrofit or replace acute care medical facilities for earthquake safety reasons prior to the year 2030.  Cedars-Sinai is planning a similar modernization of its Marina Del Rey Hospital in advance of that deadline.
