Local developer Barth Partners is planning an eye-catching apartment building at 8615 West Knoll Drive in West Hollywood.

The project, which has been submitted to the West Hollywood Design Review Subcommittee for consideration, would replace a single-family residence with a five-story structure featuring 10 residential units and parking for 17 vehicles.  Plans call for a mix of one- and two-bedroom units - including one for a very-low-income household - and a common roof deck.

Los Angeles-based architecture firm Marcello Pozzi is designing the proposed apartment building, which would be wrapped with an exterior of concrete, wood, and glass.

A report to the subcommittee by architect Gwynne Pugh describes the "brutalist" design as well thought-out and elegant, with a ground-level environment that is park-like.  He concludes the report by describing the building as being "exemplary," and "highly detailed in its simplicity."

The project site is located a short distance from 8555 Santa Monica Boulevard, where a proposed mixed-use complex featuring offices, apartments, and retail is currently up for approval.
