The Los Angeles City Council has voted to approve the release of up to $35.4 million in multifamily housing revenue bonds for the construction of a new development in Boyle Heights.

The La Veranda project, proposed by Abode Communities, would rise from a Metro-owned property near the intersection of Soto Street and Cesar E. Chavez Avenue.

Plans call for the construction of two four-story building featuring 77 residential units - 76 of which would be reserved for low-income households - above 8,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space.  Abode Communities is also designing the project, which will include outdoor common areas such as a children's playground, a jogging path, and a garden.  AHBE|MIG is serving as the project's landscape architect.

The roughly $56-million development is already partially funded through a $2-million allocation from Los Angeles County's affordable housing trust fund.

Abode is planning a similar mixed-use project on another Metro-owned property one block east at the intersection of Cesar Chavez and Fickett Street.
