Just east of MacArthur Park, developer Meta Meta Housing Corporation has broken ground on a new permanent supportive housing complex directly behind the Westlake Theatre.

Located at 619 Westlake Avenue, the project calls for the construction of a five-story edifice featuring 78 one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments - including 77 units of affordable and permanent supportive housing.

The Architects Collective is designing the building, which also includes resident amenities and open spaces.

"The building effectively negotiates the grade of the sloping site and provides two levels of parking while also accommodating ample open space within the program," reads a design description from the firm's website. "In fact, the lush streetscape gracefully slips under the building into a spacious courtyard that visually opens to the neighborhood."

According to a 2021 city staff report, the roughly $52 million cost of the 619 Westlake project (more than $670,000 per residential units), is inflated in part due to factors including design requirements due to the neighboring Westlake Theatre and various sustainability features.  Funding for the project includes a variety of state and local sources.

A similar permanent supportive housing development with 63 apartments recently broke ground a block north on Westlake Avenue.

Meta Housing Corp., which ranks among Los Angeles County's most prolific builders of affordable housing, is also developing  projects in Glendale, Downtown, East Los Angeles, and North Hills.
