Five months after we checked in, Canfield Development's Fig 31 apartments are topped out just north of Metro's Jefferson/USC Station.

The project, named for its location near the intersection of Figueroa and 31st Street, consists of a seven-story building which will feature 73 studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments above a 78-car garage.  Eight apartments are to be priced for very low- and moderate-income households.

The contemporary podium-type building is designed by HBA Architects, and will be clad in the red brick - a nod to the nearby USC campus.  Plans call for several common amenities, including a rooftop deck.

Upon completion in 2021, Canfield intends to market the project as student housing.  The building will have capacity for up to 187 residents, according to a company website.

Several other developments targeting students are in the works for properties near USC, including a mixed-use project at 38th and Figueroa Streets and two apartment buildings planned next to Expo/Vermont Station.
