A ceremony held on January 28 marked the official start of construction for NoHo 5050, a new supportive housing development from Decro Corp. and Daylight Community Development in North Hollywood.

The roughly $24-million development, named for its address at 5050 N. Bakman Avenue, will consist of a five-story building containing 40 studio, one-, and two-bedroom apartments, reserved for formerly unhoused individuals and families - including survivors of trauma.

“Individuals who have experienced gender-based violence need housing and services that center their experiences and remove the threat of re-traumatization and further marginalization,” said Amy Turk, chief executive officer of the Downtown Women’s Center, which will provide services for future residents at NoHo 5050. “Our goal to end homelessness will be achieved by utilizing trauma-informed care practices in our housing and services that support the unique needs of survivors. This groundbreaking celebration moves us one step closer to achieving our shared vision of a Los Angeles with every woman housed.”

FSY Architects is designing the low-rise building which will also include a learning center, a community room, and landscaped open space at the rear of the building.

"The NoHo 5050 project is the latest example of the fruitful relationship between service providers, local government, and neighborhood groups to address the homeless crisis in the northeast San Fernando Valley," said Los Angeles City Councilmember Paul Krekorian in prepared remarks. "Funded primarily through voter-approved Measure HHH, this facility will offer shelter, hope, security, and a sense of community to tenants who have experienced difficult times in recent months and years. The project, one of several of its kind under construction in my district, joins the growing network of temporary housing facilities in North Hollywood and adjoining communities that are providing a fresh start for our homeless neighbors."

According a Housing Department staff report published in mid-2021, NoHo 5050 will also tap funding from Los Angeles County's No Place Like Home Program.

Completion of NoHo 5050 is expected in late 2023.

Decro Corp, Daylight Community Development, and the Downtown Women's Center have worked together (and independently) on several supportive housing developments across Los Angeles County. One such project is slated to rise next door to the Women's Center's Skid Row headquarters at 5th and San Pedro Streets in Downtown.
